10 Ways To Own Your Credit Report

Safeguarding your credit report is crucial to protect your financial health and personal information. Here are some tips to help you secure your credit report:

1. Regularly Monitor Your Credit Report

  • Check Your Credit Reports Annually: You are entitled to one free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) every 12 months via AnnualCreditReport.com.
  • Use Credit Monitoring Services: Consider subscribing to credit monitoring services that alert you to any changes or suspicious activity in your credit report.

2. When to Place a Fraud Alert

  • Initial Fraud Alert: If you suspect you are a victim of identity theft, you can place a fraud alert on your credit report, which makes it harder for identity thieves to open accounts in your name.
  • Extended Fraud Alert: For confirmed identity theft victims, an extended fraud alert can be placed, lasting up to seven years.

3. If You Don’t Plan on Borrowing, Consider a Credit Freeze

  • Freeze Your Credit: A credit freeze restricts access to your credit report, making it more difficult for identity thieves to open accounts in your name. You can temporarily lift or "thaw" the freeze when necessary. Don’t forget to remove the freeze prior to applying for new credit.

4. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

  • Secure Online Accounts: Use strong, unique passwords for your financial accounts and update them regularly. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) where possible.

5. Shred Sensitive Documents

  • Destroy Paper Records: Shred any documents containing personal information before disposing of them to prevent dumpster divers from accessing your data.

6. Secure Personal Information

  • Be Cautious Online: Avoid sharing personal information on social media or unsecured websites.
  • Protect Your Mail: Collect your mail promptly and consider using a locked mailbox.

7. Be Wary of Phishing Scams

  • Verify Requests for Information: Do not respond to unsolicited requests for personal information via email, phone, or text. Verify the legitimacy of the request before providing any details.

8. Use Identity Theft Protection Services

  • Enroll in Protection Services: Identity theft protection services can offer additional monitoring and recovery assistance if your information is compromised.

9. Review Your Accounts Regularly

  • Check Statements: Regularly review bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions and report them immediately.

10. Educate Yourself

  • Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date on the latest security practices and scams to better protect yourself and your credit information.

Implementing these strategies can significantly reduce the risk of identity theft and help you maintain control over your credit report.
